Turkish Cyprus President leaves for Brussels for 3-day visit

President Dervis Eroglu of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) left for Brussels on Sunday for a three-day visit.

Eroglu will meet with EU President Belgium's Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere and high-level EU officials to discuss Direct Trade Regulation which envisages free trade from TRNC's ports to EU countries.

Eroglu told reporters that TRNC's target was to join the EU after a solution was found for the Cyprus issue, however, the Greek Cypriot administration became a member of the EU without solving the Cyprus problem.

Noting that TRNC appreciated Turkey's efforts on the path to EU membership, Eroglu said that Turkish Cypriots and Turks should be in the EU.

Eroglu said that he would discuss the promises --which were given by the EU to TRNC in 2004 and were still not kept-- during his talks in Brussels.

TRNC's Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun is accompanying Eroglu who will begin his talks on Monday.
