The British Foreign Office has made a formal complaint to Spain after Spanish Guardia Civil officers on the border of Gibraltar opened a diplomatic bag as it was been taken to Spain.
The incident took place last Friday and a UK Foreign Office spokesperson said, “This was a serious infringement of the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”
The Foreign Office said that they took the incident “very seriously” and that they have asked the Spanin to investigate what happened.
Protocol concerning official correspondence and the diplomatic bag is governed by the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
“Official correspondence and diplomatic bags are inviolable,” said the Foreign Office spokesperson.
The UK Foreign Office also said that there was no “justification” for the “infringement”.
According to the Gibraltar Chronicle, the bag was being carried by a courier, however the Foreign Office did not comment on the contents of the bag.
Gibraltar is considered a British overseas territory although it shares a land border with Spain. Spain dispute the British claim and Gibraltar has long been a contentious issue between the two countries.Last Mod: 27 Kasım 2013, 10:23
