Polling claims PM Theresa May's party will return most lawmakers, although short of ruling majority in parliament

UK exit polls suggest fall in support for Conservatives

World Bulletin / News Desk

Initial exit polls from the U.K. general election suggest Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservatives will be returned as the largest party but without an overall governing majority.

May’s party will win 314 seats, 12 short of the total needed for a ruling majority, according to an exit poll for broadcasters Sky News, ITV and the BBC.

The main opposition Labour Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, looks to have increased its number of seats in the House of Commons to 266 according to the same poll, up from 229 in the previous parliament.

As they stand, these numbers suggest a hung parliament.

The Liberal Democrats -- former coalition partners of the Conservatives -- will have 14 seats and the Scottish National Party will return only 34 lawmakers to Westminster, the poll suggested.

Twenty-two seats are projected to be won by other parties.

The populist anti-EU U.K. Independence Party may win no seats, the polling showed.
