UK freezes PA payments to combat 'terror funding'

World Bulletin / News Desk

According a news report in the The Sun, of Israel, the UK has suspended all payments to Palestine after claims of payments were made to "terrorists".

Earlier this summer furious MPs demanded action after revelations UK aid supposedly paying for civil servants in Gaza was being transferred to the Palestinian Liberation Organisation.

A spokesman for the Department for International Development (DFID) however denied any change in UK support for Palestinian Authority, explaining that “there is a new Secretary of State and she is looking at the UK’s support in the Occupied Palestinian Territories across the board. It’s quite normal when you get a new secretary of state that they look at how things are done across the board. I wouldn’t call it an official investigation. She’s looking at the whole portfolio of our work in the OPTs which goes beyond the PA. She is looking through how we work. She has a focus on making sure aid is as effective as possible and gives value for money.” The spokeswoman said that DfID is “committed to supporting the PA.”

Dfid has previously admitted the PLO makes “social welfare” provisions for prisoners’ families but ruled out the idea UK cash is being diverted in this way.
