UK to have special status in EU

World Bulletin / News Desk

EU leaders have unanimously agreed a deal on Britain’s renegotiation of its membership, setting the stage for a referendum in the U.K. this June, European Council head announced late Friday.

In a short message announcing the deal on Twitter, European Council President Donald Tusk said: “Deal. Unanimous support for new settlement for #UKinEU”.

His message on Friday evening confirmed the end of occasionally strained negotiations that lasted more than 30 hours and saw U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron in bilateral negotiations until just before sunrise.

In his own message, Cameron tweeted: “I have negotiated a deal to give the U.K. special status in the EU. I will be recommending it to Cabinet tomorrow”.

The timing of the deal will allow Cameron to call an in-out referendum in Britain’s EU membership for June 23, widely speculated to be his preferred date.
