Ukrainian security forces have launched an artillery attack Friday night to retake the rebel-held town of Slavyansk, an Anadolu Agency correspondent reported from the scene.
The artillery fire hit targets in the Semenevka and Artema neighborhoods, as well as some other parts of the town, AA correspondent said.
The number of casualties in the wake of the operation is yet to be determined.
Tensions remain high in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists are clashing with government forces.
Earlier in the day, a stray mortar shell hit children's hospital during clashes between Ukrainian army and pro-Russians gunmen. No casualties reported.
Previously, 14 Ukrainian troops were killed Thursday as their helicopter was shot down by pro-Russian separatists in Slavyansk, including a senior general.
Ukrainian pro-European business tycoon Petro Poroshenko, elected with more than 54 per cent in last week's presidential elections, vowed to rein in the separatists in the east of the country.Last Mod: 31 Mayıs 2014, 10:51
