The United Nations (UN) head's special advisor on Cyprus said on Friday that talks between the UN and guarantor countries were of great importance.

Paying a visit to the Greek capital of Athens, Alexander Downer, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Advisor on Cyprus, met with the Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Drucas and delivered a brief statement afterwards.

Pointing to the importance of talks between the UN and guarantor states Turkey, Greece and Britain, Downer said Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias' proposal to hold an international conference on Cyprus was also interesting, however, such issue had not been discussed with the UN SG yet.

Moreover, spokesperson Grigoris Delavekuras of the Greek foreign ministry said after Downer's meeting with the Greek deputy foreign minister that Greece believed the Cyprus issue should be solved by Cypriots and for themselves.

The spokesperson also said the solution should be compatible with the acquis and UN resolutions.
