The 25th Bosporus cross-continental swimming competition will be held with the participation of around 1,400 people from 55 countries this year on July 6-7.

In the only intercontinental swimming competition in the world, participants swim from the Asian side of İstanbul to the European. The event is organized by the National Olympic Committee of Turkey (TMOK), which first held the race in 1989.

There were only four women out of the 68 people who participated in the original competition, but, according to data released by the TMOK, a total of 2,224 swimmers, including 254 women, registered for the competition this year. The highest demand was from Russia, with 215 applicants.

The selection of competitors will be conducted in İstanbul, Ankara, Adana and İzmir on May 25, and the number of the people who will join the competition will be restricted to 1,400.

US Ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone and several other politicians, artists and athletes swam the six-and-a-half kilometers across the Bosporus Strait during last year's competition.
