Istanbul Penal Court rules for the arrest of four people including Hidayet Karaca, chairman of the Samanyolu Media Group, and releases eight others, including Ekrem Dumanli, editor-in-chief of Zaman newspaper.

Four suspects including Hidayet Karaca and former police chief Tufan Ergüder, have been arrested as part of the December 14 probe. But eight suspects including Ekrem Dumanlı -- the editor-in-chief of the Zaman daily -- have been released.

Detained five days as part of an ongoing media investigation, Ekrem Dumanli has been released. Banned from leaving the country, Dumanli will be tried without detention

Along Dumanli, Samanyola Group Chairman Hidayet Karaca as well as two others were also detained. Former Police Chiefs Tufan Erguder, Ertan Ercikti and Mustafa Kilicarslan were the others who were detained.

Hidayet Karaca was charged with “managing a terror organization.” Three others – Tufan Erguder, Ertan Ercikti and Mustafa Kilicaslan – were charged with “membership of the organization.”

With the operation starting on 14th December, 31 people had been detained. Some were released immediately whilst others were to be placed on surveillance.

Dumanli, Karaca and 14 others were kept under surveillance for 5 days whilst in custody.
