AFAD warns of large magnitude quake in Southeast

The president of the Prime Ministry's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD), Murat Nurlu, has said the recent quakes that hit the country's Southeast are the foreshocks of a possible powerful earthquake measuring about 7.3 on the Richter scale. Speaking to NTV on Monday, Nurlu said there is a high risk of a large magnitude earthquake occurring on the East Anatolian fault line, which begins at Karlıova in Bingöl and extends to Hatay.

“According to our projections, a magnitude 7.2 or 7.3 earthquake could take place in this fault line zone,” he said.

Over the past 10 days, Muş and Erzurum have been shaken by several earthquakes, promoting AFAD to take action and intensify its work in the region.

“There is intense activity in these provinces. We have begun offering training to people about quake preparedness. We have also been increasing the search-rescue capacity of these provinces. In addition, work for the establishment of logistics centers in 17 spots across the country has also begun,” he said.

AFAD will provide an updated map of Turkey's fault lines in 2014.
