The court case of Ethem Sarısülük, who lost his life in Ankara during the Gezi Park protests after being hit by a bullet shot by a police officer’s gun had already begun.
Ahmet Şahbaz, the police officer suspected of being responsible for his death, is on trial in Ankara’s Sixth Heavy Penalties Court for ‘overstepping the boundary of self-defense without intent’.
The first hearing took place in a tense atmosphere as a group of protestors gathered in front of the courthouse. The hearing was also attended by members of the Republican People’s Party (CHP).
Head of the court hearing Afak İlleez told representatives of both the defendant and the complainant that the hearing could not continue under the current circumstances and would be postponed until the 28th of October.
