A fire started at a market place on Altindag district of Ankara Tuesday night, was distinguished with the efforts of the fire brigade.
Flames covered Yunus Emre Public Market with 680 shops due to an unknown reason.
Firefighters had difficulty putting the fire under control due to the collapse of the marketplace’s roof and the explosions resulting from the fire’s contact with gas cylinders.
Employees were evacuated from a neighboring gas station whose commercial operation was halted as firefighters sprayed foam at it. Electricity to the neighborhood was cut off as a precaution and some hotels were vacated.
The fire was extinguished after five hours of intense efforts of the fire brigade.
Mustafa Irmak, Manager on Duty of Ankara Fire Brigade, said, "We have responded to the fire with 52 vehicles and 126 personnel. The fire is extinguished but the market place is out of condition."
Two fire fighters were hospitalized in the incident where an investigation was launched.
Damage reports are expected today.
