First Turkish-made oil research vessel to be launched

The first Turkish-made oil research ship will be launched tomorrow; the ship will be able to conduct research at a depth of 3 thousand meters under the sea.

The ship will conduct seismic investigations under the sea, search for oil, make maps of the seafloor, survey marine pollution and examine underwater life.

Science, Industry and Technology Minister Nihat Ergun, who will attend the ceremony tomorrow as the ship is launched, said the ship can conduct research at a depth of 3 thousand meters under the sea.

The first research vessel built in Turkey, the TUBITAK Marmara was built to conduct oceanographic research. The ship, which cost 13 million 800 thousand Turkish liras, is 45 meters long and 9 meters wide. With the addition of the related equipment, it will be able to engage in oil exploration and seismic research. With 11 scientists and 12 crew members, the ship will operate in territorial waters. 

Meanwhile, Energy ship "Fatmagul Sultan", manufactured in Turkey, has reached Lebanese territorial waters on Saturday.

The ship will provide electricity to Lebanon for a period of three years.
