Well-known historian Professor İlber Ortaylı says over 6,000 valuable books were destroyed in a fire that nearly destroyed a historic wooden building on the campus of Galatasaray University on Tuesday night, the Taraf daily reported on Friday.

While the investigation continues into the fire at Galatasaray University, Ortaylı said the entire collection of valuable law books was destroyed in the fire and that some 6,000 books he donated to the university were also destroyed

The 142-year-old building, which is located next to Kabataş High School and near a number of museums in Ortaköy and was first erected as an extension to Çırağan Palace, was devoured by flames Tuesday night.

The fire broke out at around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening inside a building that houses a number of departments as well as faculty offices. Campus security intervened first, using fire extinguishers. The Beşiktaş Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after and filed a report that the fire had been extinguished successfully. However, flames were seen shooting out of the building's third floor as the teams were filing their report.
