Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin announced on Thursday that İstanbul is the province with the highest number of child rape cases with 1,486 such charges filed in 2011.
In a response to a parliamentary question posed by Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu, Ergin provided details of criminal cases opened in 2011 that were related to child abuse, child rape and child harassment in the country. According to Ergin's data, 1,486 child rape cases, 2,488 child abuse cases and 2,223 child harassment cases were opened in İstanbul. İzmir, with 568 cases of rape and 901 cases of harassment, had the second-highest incidence of these cases.
Turkey's eastern provinces see lower numbers of these types of cases filed, according to Ergin. In Tunceli, there were three rape cases, five abuse cases and three harassment cases regarding children filed in 2011. In the eastern province of Diyarbakır, 92 cases of rape, 193 cases of abuse and 75 cases of harassment involving a child were opened. Konya, which is regarded as one of the most conservative provinces in the country, had 354 cases of child rape and 438 cases on child harassment.
Tanrıkulu later told reporters that child abuse, rape and harassment must be made the most important issues in the country by the government. “A research commission should be established as soon as possible to deal with those issues,” added Tanrıkulu.
