Media ban imposed on Reyhanlı images
A one-week ban on images appearing in the media of victims killed or wounded by the twin bomb attacks in Reyhanlı was imposed on Saturday by a local court.
The Reyhanlı 2nd Court of First Instance announced that a broadcasting ban had been imposed on the deadly attack. In accordance with the ban, TV stations, newspapers and Internet broadcasters will not be allowed to show or report on images of the victims. The ban was issued upon a request by the Reyhanlı Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
Once the seven-day period is over, the court will reconvene to decide whether to lift or extend the ban.
However, the ban drew the ire of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). The party's deputy chairman, Gürsel Tekin, said the ban was aimed at preventing the public from learning the truth behind the attacks. “Why was such a ban imposed? Isn't it our right to know the facts [related to the attacks]?” he asked, calling on the government to share the information it has about the attacks with the public.
Two journalists were detained on Sunday for attempting to take photos at the sites of the explosions in Reyhanlı. The police also seized their cameras.
