Turkey is an attractive tourist destination for mostly European and Russian visitors, but the majority of its licensed tourist guides speak English as a second language.

According to data provided by the Culture and Tourism Ministry, Germany ranks number one in the list of the countries of origin for foreign visitors, with Russia coming in at number two. Britain is third. However, the number of tour guides who speak English is 7,290, whereas those who are able to communicate in German number 2,537. There are only 671 Russian-speaking guides.

The figures show the number of visitors from Germany was 5.03 million in 2012. A total of 3.6 million Russians came to Turkey in the same year, while the number of British visitors was 2.5 million. Next on the list were Bulgaria (1.5 million), the Netherlands (1.28 million) and Iran (1.18 million).

The number of licensed tourism guides, according to the registries of the same ministry, exceeds 13,000. English tops the list in terms of languages guides can speak. German ranks second. French is third, with 1,757 guides who can speak this language, followed by 674 Italian-speaking guides. Then comes Russian (671), Spanish (636), Japanese (624), Bulgarian (276), Dutch (271), Arabic (262) and Persian (37).

With respect to the distribution of tour guides in terms of cities, İstanbul tops the list as expected with 4,750. İzmir is second with 2,110. Ankara has 1,986 tour guides, while Turkey's tourism capital Antalya has only 1,859 registered tour guides.
