Turkish coast guard rescued nine people after a Tanzanian-flagged dry cargo vessel capsized in the Sea of Marmara on Thursday, officials said.

The 59m long freighter called 'Pasha' was traveling from the western province of Izmit to Casablanca, Morocco when it turned on its side 3 km off Marmara Island, prompting the shipmaster to send out a mayday to Canakkale province coastal security officials.

They responded by dispatching a tug and a "KEGM-6" rescue boat, which picked up nine crew members aboard the vessel, three of whom are Turkish nationals, as well as Egyptians and Syrians, sources said.

The capsized ship lost some of its freight, made up of containers and lumber, while there was no reported leakage of fuel, officials said.
