A pedestrian overpass has collapsed in Turkey's biggest and most population city Istanbul.

Early reports state that two have been killed and two were left injured after a concrete mixer hit the bridge.

The accident happened along the busy E-5 highway in the Avcılar district during morning rush hour.

Avcilar mayor Handan Toprak told NTV that at least two people were killed, but it was later confirmed only one had died.

Several people remain trapped under the rubble as efforts to rescue them continue, CNN Turk reported.

In 2012, another truck also hit an overpass in Avcilar district but it had not collapsed. However, in 2010, an overpass did collapse in Beylikduzu district after being hit by a truck. There were no fatalities in the two accidents.
