The prosecution against Kenan Evren and Tahsin Sahinkaya, the two former army generals who are on trial for orchestrating Turkey’s 12 September 1980 military coup, has requested that the pair be given life sentences.

The prosecution, led by Selcuk Kocaman, has asked that the pair be charged under the 146th article of the No.765 of the Turkish Penal Code, which states a heavy punishment for those who seek to change, exchange or erase the Turkish  constitution in part or in full, by attempting to prevent the parliament from conducting its duties.  

Selcuk Kocaman, has also requested that the two generals be stripped of their rank.

The case has been put to recess till 1:30pm local time.
