Aytac Baran, a member of right wing pro-Kurdish Huda-Par, or Free Cause Party, has been shot dead. Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, members was threating him before his assassination.

A member of pro-Kurdish Huda-Par, or Free Cause Party, has been shot dead in Turkey’s southeastern Diyarbakir province, a security official said Monday.

His lawyer said in a statement that Aytac Baran was threatened by the leftist, pro-Kurdish Workers' Party, or PKK, members before his assassination.

According to the official, Aytac Baran was in Sehitlik town when unidentified attackers opened fire on him. He was rushed to the Selahattin Eyyubi State hospital, but he succumbed to his wounds.

Baran was a member of Huda-Par and chairman of the "Yeni Ihya-Der" foundation, the official added.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and security measures in the area have been stepped up.
