At least seven people died when a car hit a passenger minibus in the southern province of Şanlıurfa on Wednesday.
The accident occurred on the 15th kilometer of the Şanlıurfa-Gaziantep Highway, reports say. Ambulances and rescue teams have been dispatched to the area.
The accident comes on the second day of Islamic holiday Eid al-Adha. Since the extended Eid al-Adha holiday commenced in Turkey last Saturday, the number of accidents has begun to soar all over the country.
As thousands of Turkish vacationers hit the road for Eid al-Adha, accidents across the country claimed many lives, leading to fears of an even higher toll in the days to come. Thousands of people are travelling during Eid, leading to many fatal traffic accidents across the country. Seven people had died and 36 were injured on the first day of Eid on Tuesday in 17 separate traffic accidents across the country.
Hundreds of people die in traffic accidents during the holidays in Turkey every year. The National Police Department and the Gendarmerie General Command (JGK) -- both traffic authorities in Turkey, though responsible for different areas -- work together and increase cooperation on the roads. They have been implementing strict measures to prevent accidents, one of which is increasing the number of pullover points for cars.
