After 12 days of mild air ,the General Directorate of Meteorology has forecast that cold weather will hit the country, with heavy rain and snowfall in many provinces from İstanbul to Diyarbakır.
Temperatures across the Marmara region will decrease about four to six degrees Celsius at the start of the week. Weather officials warned that there will be heavy rainfall in Silivri, Çatalca and Hadımköy, all towns to the west of İstanbul, with sleet turning into snow in the evening in the other districts of the province.
Meteorologists have warned city residents to take precautions on the road, including using snow tires or chains to prevent possible accidents that might be caused by the coming heavy rain and snowfall.
Meanwhile, snow that started in the early hours of Sunday quickly covered Çanakkale province in the Marmara region, preventing ships from passing through the Dardanelles Strait. The Dardanelles was also closed to transit traffic and passage of ships temporarily.
Some provinces of the northwestern region of Thrace will experience sleet, and snowfall is expected in the provinces of Edirne and Kırklareli.
According to information released by the General Directorate of Meteorology, there will be heavy rainfall in several southeastern provinces, including Diyarbakır, Mardin, Batman, Siirt and Şırnak, while heavy snowfall is expected in the provinces of Bingöl, Muş, Bitlis and Hakkari. Officials warned people to take precautions against possible floods, storms and avalanches.
There will be sleet and snow in the higher parts of the Aegean region. A strong wind of 30-50 kilometers per hour from the southeast, known as the Lodos, is expected in the southern parts of the region. Officials warned citizens to take necessary precautions against carbon monoxide poisoning that might be caused by the Lodos. In Ankara, heavy rain will turn into snowfall at the beginning of the week.
