A man suspected of attempting to assassinate Turkish President Abdullah Gul had been arrested on Friday.

Guards at the Cankaya presidential palace in Ankara had identified a suspicious man who was wandering around the palace on Thursday. The suspect, Mehmet Salih Adli, 35, was immediately stopped and searched by the security units present in the area.

Found on his person were a handgun, some amount of unidentified drugs and a DVD of the Robert Redford-directed movie “The Conspirator,” which is about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

When Ankara Police Department counterterrorism units arrived at the scene, they interrogated Adlı and he was later taken to a police station for further questioning. He was later arrested by an Ankara court, and jailed pending trial.

The suspect had reportedly been charged previously with 17 different crimes, including sexual harassment, menacing, drug dealing and wounding several people.
