Top Turkish Muslim cleric rejects sectarian discrimination

Turkey's top Muslim cleric has condemned sectarian discrimination and violence, saying Islamic scholars "can never act on sectarian grounds."

President of Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate Mehmet Gormez expressed concern over escalating sectarian tensions in Iraq during a meeting on Friday with Iraqi Muslim leader Sheikh Mahmood Abdulaziz al-Ani in Ankara, Gormez's press office said.

"Islamic scholars can never act on sectarian basis. Our duty is to insistingly meet on the main road to Islam and on the way to Koran and Sunnah and to protect and improve our brotherhood," Gormez said.
