Turkey's defense ministry could soon be purchasing an unarmed version of the MQ-9 Reaper drone from the U.S. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, after a bid to buy an armed version failed.
According to Hurriyet Daily News, Turkish defense sources said the bid could be renewed after admitting that the first request was not realistic, with one senior official saying, “an unarmed Reaper may also suit our operational requirements.”
A U.S. defense source was quoted saying “Congress’ reluctance over the Reaper sale was because Ankara kept on asking for an armed version...things may be different with a request for an unarmed version.”
Turkey also had a previous bid for a Predator drone, which is much less agile than the Reaper, dropped after losing out to Israel.Last Mod: 04 Mart 2014, 17:50
