Sheikh Said Pirani, a Kurdish Islamic scholar who was executed in Turkey's mainly Kurdish south-eastern city of Diyarbakir in 1925 after leading a rebellion against the newfound Turkish republic's secular reforms, has had the very same public square he was executed in renamed after him.

After having led what later become known as the Sheikh Said Rebellion against the secular Turkish state in protest against the abolishment of the Islamic Ottoman Empire, Sheikh Said - a revered spiritual leader of the Naqshbandi school of Sufi Islam - was captured in April 1925 and executed in Diyarbakir's Dagkapi Square.

A proposal to rename the square to the Sheikh Said Square was made in August and has now been accepted by the local authorities.
