Seyed Ali Mohamed Mousavi, secretary-general of the Developing-Eight (D-8) group of nations, said Wednesday that Turkey would assume the group's rotating chairmanship at the next D-8 summit, to be held in Turkey later this year.
He said the launch of a second phase of the organization, which was founded in 1997, would allow member states to operate in a manner that reflected the need for development and the current swift pace of change.
"It will be appropriate for the organization to shift from the current policy coordination situation to a new phase of project implementation," Mousavi said at a meeting with Islamic Development Bank (IDB) President Ahmed Mohamed Ali in the Saudi city of Jeddah.
Established with the aim of bolstering cooperation among member states, the D-8 currently incudes Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
The organization, Mousavi stressed, needed the IDB's support, both for D-8-sponsored projects and the economic progress of member states.
He called for signing an MoU between the D-8 and the bank with the aim of improving cooperation between the two.
"The potential memorandum of understanding would aim to forge a strategic partnership between the D-8 and the IDB," Mousavi said.
"It would also seek to encourage the development of joint programs and projects in D-8 cooperation areas through the utilization of the human and material resources of both organizations," he added.
The IDB's Ali, for his part, pledged continued support for the D-8's projects and developments plans, saying this support would be delivered by promoting partnerships and cooperation with the organization.
"We can support inclusive growth, including greater access to finance for the poor and financial stability, in our mutual member countries," Ali said.
He went on to stress that the IDB aimed to foster economic development and social progress in D-8 member states and Muslim communities.
"To reach these targets, we work with many international organizations, with which we have already signed memorandums of understanding," Ali said. "We hope to work with the D-8 in many areas of cooperation."
Mousavi has invited Ali to attend the 9th D-8 summit, to be held in Turkey later this year.Last Mod: 03 Temmuz 2014, 16:17
