A long-considered project that includes monitoring country borders with zeppelins is now to be put into practice by the Turkish army.

According to Turkish military sources, the Turkish Ground Forces Command has initiated a project to observe the nation's parameters using this balloon system.

This balloon systems has already been adopted by countries like the USA, Britain and Germany in maintaining the border security.

After the completion of the procurement process, the system will start being used in 2015 by Ground Forces Command troops who are primarily responsible for border security.

In addition to motion-detectors that can work day and night across a vast area, these systems are less risky and more cost effective than Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), otherwise known as drones.

Moreover, its operation and usage is much easier. According to sources, these systems would be more advantageous than UAVs in terms of constant observation in certain areas on a 24-7 basis.

Observation balloon systems can also perform aerial detection, identification, recognition and tracking tasks. The system can select targets to be followed automatically or by the operator.

Thermal cameras and sensors can be placed into balloons that can be used to gather intelligence. Images from the balloons can also be instantly transferred to the command center.
