The closed Akcakale Customs Gate connecting to Syria will not open until the security problem which necessitated the closure is eliminated, according to Turkish Minister of Customs and Trade, Hayati Yazici, on Thursday.
The Akcakale Customs Gate, which is in Turkey's southeastern Sanliurfa province and connects to Syria, was closed due to security threats from the Syrian side.
Yazici stated that the frozen customs services will resume as soon as the security problems generating from Syria are settled.
"We have eight customs gates with Syria. A few of them are active as of now, the others are closed. Because of the violent clashes between the Free Syrian Army, which was formed by the Syrian people, different armed groups, and also their fight against the regime forces, we have been facing a security risk at the highest level.
"[The region on the Syrian side across] the Akcakale Customs Gate also passed into different hands, among the armed elements warring against the Assad regime. So, there is an unsafe environment there, both in Akcakale and Karkamis," Yazici said.Last Mod: 31 Ocak 2014, 09:44
