Science, Industry and Technology Minister Nihat Ergün announced on Friday that the Housing Development Administration of Turkey (TOKİ) will be used as a model by the regional government of northern Iraq in establishing a similar institution.
Speaking after a meeting held at the ministry's headquarters in Ankara with Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) Trade and Industry Minister Sinan Chalabi, Ergün stated that after all the troubles the region has experienced in the past, it is now taking steps forward to bring about prosperity that will contribute to a more peaceful social environment.
Chalabi also commented on his government's relationship with Turkey, calling the country its most important friend. He said: “We see Turkey as an example in every field. During the post-Saddam period, we have come to understand that we are a poor country and we want to establish production mechanisms similar to the organized industrial zones in Turkey to contribute to our economy. We also follow the work by TOKİ very closely and our plan includes establishing a similar institution in the KRG in the near future.”
According to government officials who wish to remain anonymous, TOKİ and the KRG have signed an agreement to cooperate and, within its framework, TOKİ experts will visit the region to help it establish a similar institution. The Turkish government will also send experts to assist in the establishment of organized industrial zones in the region.
The KRG has also invited Turkish businessmen to invest in the tourism sector of the Sulaymaniyah Governorate.Last Mod: 26 Ocak 2013, 16:44
