The ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party will declare their nominee for the August presidential election next week, Secretary General Haluk Ipek said Tuesday.

Ipek said: "We will announce our presidential nominee on July 1 at 11.30."

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is serving his third term, having taken office in 2003, and according to party rules he must step down after his current term.

It is widely anticipated that he will be the AK Party’s presidential candidate for the August 10 election.

Turkey's opposition parties the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the National Movement Party (MHP) named Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the former Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as their nominee on June 16.

The vote will be the first time the president is elected by direct popular vote.

A candidate needs more than 50 percent of the popular vote to be elected in the first round. If none of the expected candidates receives the required percentage, there will be a second round vote on August 24.
