A powerful tornado has caused damage after it hit the eastern shores of Istanbul on June 19,  a rare occurrence for northwestern Turkey.

The tornado was spotted over the Marmara Sea before near Tuzla before making its way to Kocaeli.

Some villas in the Mercan area were severely damaged and a yacht was thrown 100 meters into a residential area.

Fences and roofs were damaged and several windows were broken, shattering glass around the area.
