Alemitu Bekele of Turkey won gold medal in the women's 5000m at the 20th European Athletics Championships in Spain on Sunday.

Bekele ran 14:52.20, and broke championship record, while Elvan Abeylegesse of Turkey ran 14:54.44 and won silver medal in the same race.

Another Turkish athlete Meryem Erdogan completed the race seventh with 15:14.92.

For the first time in Turkish athletics history, two Turkish athletes shared the first two ranks in a race.

Also, Turkey, for the first time, completed a European championships by winning four medals in total. Elvan Abeylegesse won gold medal in women's 10,000m and Nevin Yanit won gold medal at women's 100 meters hurdles category in the championships.

Turkey ranked the 5th among 50 countries in the championships by winning three gold and one silver medals.

Turkey competed in the championships with 12 women and eight men athletes.
