Turkish court arrests army officers in Sledgehammer probe

A court has arrested four active duty army officers and released a staff colonel as part of the widening investigation into a subversive plan known as Sledgehammer.

The 13th İstanbul High Criminal Court late on Wednesday arrested Coast Guard Commander Adm. Abdullah Can Erenoğlu, Air Forces Brig. Gen. Mustafa İlhan and staff colonels Ender Kahya and Önder Çelebi on charges of plotting a coup.

The suspects were interrogated by İstanbul public prosecutor Hüseyin Ayar earlier in the day and referred the five suspects to the court. The court released Staff Col. Yusuf Afat pending trial.

Sledgehammer is a subversive plan allegedly prepared by a clique within the military. The plot included plans to shoot down Turkish jets and bomb large mosques at busy prayer hours with the purpose of undermining the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government and eventually unseating it.
