Turkish GSM operators will ensure uninterrupted mobile communication in case of disasters from now on.
Turkey's Transportation Ministry charged GSM operators in the country to be responsible for enabling uninterrupted mobile cooperation in several regions in case of earthquake, flood, avalanche or other disasters.
"(GSM operator) Turkcell will be responsible for 47 provinces including Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir that cover 74 percent of total population," the company's deputy director general Koray Ozturkler for institutional communication and relations, told reporters in Ankara.
Ozturkler said GSM operators would be obliged to back-up communication with mobile base stations in order to make urgent and emergency calls without any problems or delay in case of any disaster.
Under the new implementation, Turkey is divided into 25 regions.
