The European Basketball Championships, universally referred to as EuroBasket, will kick off in Lithuania on Wednesday.
The Turkish national basketball team, also known as the "12 Giant Men", travelled to Lithuania on Monday to represent Turkey in the tournament.
In its Group A games in the first round of the championship, Turkey will play against Spain, Lithuania, Poland, Great Britain and Portugal. The Turkish team will have its first match in its group with Portugal on Wednesday.
With Orhun Ene as the head coach, the 12 Giant Men to compete at EuroBasket 2011 are Cenk Akyol, Ender Arslan, Kerem Tunceri, Sinan Guler, Emir Preldzic, Oguz Savas, Omer Onan, Omer Asik, Ersan Ilyasova, Hidayet Turkoglu, Enes Kanter and Izzet Turkyilmaz.
Turkish national basketball team has so far participated in a total of twenty European Basketball Championships. The team got its highest position in the tournament in 2001 as it was presented with the silver medal.
In the consequent three tournaments, the national team could not make it to the top 8, but was ranked the 8th at the final championship held in Poland in 2009.
In the history of European Basketball Championships, Turkish national basketball team played against 39 rivals. Turkey played against France the most in the finals of the tournament as it met the French team in 13 games. As for the teams in its group, Turkey competed with Poland 7 times, with Lithuania 6 times, with Spain 5 times and with Great Britain twice.
Out of the 146 games Turkey played in EuroBasket finals, the team won 59 games and lost 87 matches.
The 12 Giant Men, which won 8 consecutive games in the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey, lost against the U.S. at the finals and was ranked the second.
Turkish national basketball team desires to make it to the top 2 at EuroBasket 2011 in order to guarantee a spot at the 2012 Summer Olympics to be held in London.
