Ankara police took 58 Greenpeace activists into custody on Tuesday during a demonstration protesting the establishment of nuclear power plants in the northern province of Sinop and the southern province of Mersin.

The protest took place in front of Parliament in Ankara, Cihan News Agency said.

The environmental activists from Greenpeace held placards that said, “We do not want any nuclear power plants,” “No to dirty nuclear agreements,” “Turkey does not want nuclear power” and “We do not want any nuclear war” during the protest.

Arriving at the scene of the demonstration quickly, a number of police officers warned the protestors to disperse peacefully. However, the protestors did not listen to police warnings and were detained and taken to the Ankara Police Department for questioning.

News reports revealed that security measures are being increased outside of Parliament following the protest by the Greenpeace activists.

The news reports also noted that the Greenpeace activists collected approximately 170,000 signatures to show people's opposition to the establishment of nuclear power plants.
