A police officer was killed in an armed attack in southeastern Turkey.

The governor of Diyarbakir, Mustafa Toprak, told the AA that unidentified people opened fire on a police team with long-range weapons in the town of Sur.

"A police officer lost his life en route to hospital. Another officer and two civilians were wounded in the attack," he said.

The governor added that efforts were under way to capture the gunmen.
