Turkish rectors call for calm ahead of local elections

75 university rectors across Turkey have issued a joint statement calling for Turkish society to unite for the sake of national security.

Citing threats to national security after a top secret meeting between senior Turkish officials was leaked on the internet, the statement urged citizens to allow Sunday's local elections to pass peacefully and now allow shadows to be cast over Turkey's democracy.

The rectors underlined their request that the people avoid all sorts of behaviour which could pose a risk to national security, saying 'No one has the right to destabilize Turkey and attempts to do so should not be permissed.'
