Food, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Mehdi Eker announced on Tuesday, celebrated as World Milk Day in Turkey, that the ministry is planning to expand the school milk project and will now provide honey and nuts to students in addition to milk.

The minister also added that they are in the planning stages of expanding the school milk project and that ayran was not included in the project due to its short shelf life and storage issues.

The school milk project was launched by the government last year under which approximately 7 million schoolchildren receive free milk three times a week at school. The project aims to increase milk consumption among children and improve students' nutrition between kindergarten and fifth grade.

Minister Eker also indicated that annual milk consumption per capita in Turkey is currently 200 liters. The ministry is taking a series of measures to ensure that consumers are receiving healthy milk and other dairy products.
