Turkish Weightlifting Federation officials have quit after five lifters tested positive for banned substances during the European under-23 championships in Israel last month.

Federation president Hasan Akkuş and his entire board resigned on Friday following the five positive doping results.

Akkuş would not name the weightlifters, saying their positives had not been confirmed yet, but said none of them had won medals in the competition.

Akkuş said the federation "devoted most of its time to struggling against doping" and that he was "heartbroken" by the incident.

The resignation decision was taken at a board meeting on Thursday night, where it was also decided that vice president Zeki Türkeş will keep his position until the next election. The THF was scheduled to hold an extraordinary general meeting at the end of February.

However, due to resignations, the date for the meeting has been moved forward to a day in the first week of February. Akkuş said he is not planning to run for president in the futur
