Autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, suicidal tendencies and substance abuse are among many illnesses and behaviors found in children with older fathers.

The JAMA Psychiatry suggested that tihis was in connection to sperm mutations in men who become fathers relatively late in life, after comparing children of 24-year-old fathers and 45-year-old fathers.

The results raise fears that as more and more men delay fatherhood, these illnesses and behaviors are likely to become more common among children.

"With the demographic change we have seen in the last decade, on a population level this is a concern and we might expect higher rates of psychoses now and in the future," Dr James MacCabe, senior lecturer in psychosis at the Institute of Psychiatry, told the BBC.

However, at the same time the doctor noted that older fathers were usually a lot more emotionally and financially stable, which would most likely "outweigh" the risks.
