The globe saw the hottest May on record this year, UN’s World Meteorological Organization said on Tuesday.

"The global average temperature over land and sea for May 2014 was the highest for May since records began in 1880, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) spokesperson, Claire Nullis said in a press conference in the U.N. headquarters in Geneva on Tuesday.

The combined average temperature of May 2014 over global land and ocean surfaces was 0.74 degrees celsius above the 20th century average of 14.8 degrees celsius.

WMO has compiled these facts through data received from the U.S. National Athmospheric and Oceanic Administration and the Japan Meteorological Agency's Tokyo Climate Center, she added.
