The percentage of residents who drink alcohol is 20 percent in the Western Marmara region, which is the highest in Turkey, followed by the Aegean region with 18.8 percent.

The percentage of residents who consume alcohol is highest in the Western Marmara region, while the Southeastern Anatolia region has the lowest percentage, a Health Ministry study has revealed.

According to the Health Ministry study, titled “Turkey Chronic Disease Prevalence and Risk Factors,” carried out with 18,477 participants above the age of 15 from 81 cities across Turkey, the percentage of residents who consume alcohol in Turkey is much lower than the world average.

The percentage of residents who drink alcohol is 20 percent in the Western Marmara region, which is the highest in Turkey, followed by the Aegean region with 18.8 percent and Istanbul in third place with 17.6 percent. Of those surveyed in Southeastern Anatolia, 87 percent said they have never consumed alcohol in their lives, 8 percent said they only consume alcohol once a month, 3 percent said they drink alcohol between two and four times a month and 2 percent said they consume alcohol more than four times a month.

According to the ministry's study, based on a questionnaire, men constitute 23 percent of total alcohol consumers while women make up only 4 percent.

The region with the second-lowest percentage of alcohol drinkers is the Central Eastern part of Anatolia with 5.5 percent. It is followed by Central Anatolia with 6.8 percent.
