Tunisia's deputy finance minister and Paris University lecturer Prof. Dr. Moncef Cheikhrouhou in an exclusive interview which was published on Monday said that a growing Turkey frightens the West, as Turkey's sphere of influence spreads from the Mediterranean all the way to western China and therefore possesses the potential to revive the historic silk road trade route.

Speaking to Turkey's Yeni Safak, Dr. Cheikhrouhou said that Turkey would not become a regional leader without facing opposition from a variety of lobby groups, and advised Turkey to be patient and work to create a new environment of compromise in the Middle-East.

Dr. Cheikhrouhou also noted that while the US economy is suffering more and more day by day, the Turkish economy has grown by 9.5%. He also claimed that it is for this reason that the US has started a smear campaign against Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Referring to the historic Ottoman campaigns to conquer Vienna, Dr. Cheikhrouhou said that a growing Turkey is causing panic in Europe, as they sense the Muslims once again advancing to the gates of Vienna.

The lecturer and deputy minister also acknowledged that there are some forces that are working to bring down the Turkish government and undermine democracy in the country. 'If one day I wake up to hear that an attack, some sort of interference or a coup has been carried out in Turkey, believe me that would be the death of me,' he said.
