Unidentified militants reportedly kidnapped 20 Iraqi policemen in the city of Fallujah on Sunday, a security source said.

"Some 50 unidentified militants kidnapped the policemen and took them to an undisclosed location," the source told Anadolu Agency, requesting anonymity.

Police authorities are now in contact with local tribesmen to locate the abductors, he added.

The Iraqi army is currently pursuing a major military operation in Iraq's restive Anbar province, of which Fallujah and Ramadi are the main cities.

According to the government, the onslaught aims to flush out fighters affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant group.

Local Sunni tribes opposed to the Shiite-dominated government, however, have reacted angrily to civilian causalities caused by the campaign.
