Five fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) were killed on Thursday in confrontations with Iraqi police in Ramadi, the capital of the western Iraqi province of Anbar, a security source said.
He said violent confrontations take place in different parts of the city between ISIL militants on one hand and Iraqi policemen and tribesmen on the other.
The source said operations against ISIL have been ongoing for a whole week now.
Meanwhile, a tribal source revealed on Thursday that the headquarters of the 8th Iraqi division and the Anbar operations command base were attacked by tribesmen after the Iraqi army had shelled sites in northern and northeastern Ramadi.
At least nine people were killed and 32 others injured Friday in an army artillery barrage in Iraq's western city of Fallujah, a tribal leader told Anadolu Agency.
Rafae al-Jemeli said that the shelling targeted residential areas in several areas in Fallujah.
According to the tribal leader, clashes were still raging between armed tribesmen and government forces in the city.
