Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has issued a decree setting the date for the country's upcoming presidential elections – the fifth in the nation's history – at April 17, according to a Friday statement issued by the presidency.

Bouteflika, 76, has yet to say whether he will vie for a fourth presidential term, although he was officially nominated for the post by his ruling National Liberation Party.

Fifteen political figures have so far announced their intention to contest the polls, including Ahmed Benbitour, a former prime minister who resigned in 2000 following disagreements with the presidency.

Another former premier, Ali Ben Fliss, described as Bouteflika's strongest would-be competitor, is expected to soon announce whether or not he plans to make a bid for the top office.
