Britain’s Ambassador to Iraq, Peter Frank, announced on Monday that a number of British citizens have been arrested for supplying ineffective military devices to the Iraqi army Anadolu has reported. The ambassador made his comments at a press conference in Karbala; no details of the sentences were given.

In August, Iraqi Brigadier General Jihad Al-Jaberi, was sentenced to two years in prison for obtaining IED detector equipment used to detect explosives with a success rate of less than 30 per cent. The ADE 651 is a hand-held device produced by ATSC, a British company. Iraq has spent about $85 million to import parts for this device during the past three years.

The interior ministry in Baghdad announced last November that it had received the first batch of anti-explosive equipment from the United States.
